Historia de la Oficina para Católicos Hispanos
Por muchos años, la Oficina para Católicos Hispanos ha trabajado en el desarrollo programas y ministerios que sirven a la creciente comunidad católica hispana en los cinco condados que conforman la Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia.
En respuesta al crecimiento de la comunidad hispana de Filadelfia, su eminencia el Cardenal Justin Rigali transformó la Oficina para Católicos Hispanos en el 2005 nombrando al mons. Hugh Joseph Shields, Vicario para Católicos Hispanos quien a su vez representaba al cardenal al abordar las necesidades pastorales en el apostolado hispano de la Arquidiócesis de Filadelfia a fin de fortalecer su participación en la vida de la Iglesia.
En el 2011, siguiendo las recomendaciones que hizo USCCB Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church (Secretariado para la Diversidad Cultural en la Iglesia), el cardenal Rigali modificó el ministerio del Vicario para Católicos Hispanos formando la Oficina para Ministerios Culturales y nombrando al Rev. Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R. Vicario para Ministerios Culturales. A finales del 2015 padre Lewandowski fue llamado por el Provincial de su orden, Los Padres Redentoristas, a servir como párroco en la parroquia Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, en Baltimore, dejando la posición de vicario abierta. El 29 de febrero del 2016, el reverendo Gregory J. Semeniuk, C.M., comenzó su servicio como Vicario de Ministerios Culturales en la Aquidiócesis de Filadelfia. La Oficina para Católicos Hispanos, la Oficina para Católicos Afroamericanos y la Oficina para el Cuidado Pastoral de Migrantes y Refugiados, forman parte de la Oficina para Ministerios Culturales cuya misión es principalmente promover la unidad en la diversidad, en la vida diaria de nuestra fe católica.
La OCH trabaja en armonía con las otras oficinas de la Arquidiócesis para servir mejor a la comunidad hispana, así como a organizaciones y personas que no son necesariamente parte de la Arquidiócesis, pero que también se preocupan por el bienestar de nuestra comunidad hispana. Actualmente, la OCH sirve de recurso a 36 parroquias con católicos hispanos, con un total de 29 sacerdotes, 28 hermanas religiosas, 14 diáconos y varios agentes pastorales y laicos voluntarios.
Es la función de la Oficina para Católicos Hispanos (O.C.H.) caminar en solidaridad con la creciente población hispanohablante que reside en la Arquidiócesis, reafirmando sus valores y tradiciones y promoviendo liderazgo en sus parroquias y comunidades. Esta población creciente refleja el aspecto multicultural de los EE.UU. con representación de los 19 países hispanohablantes de las Américas y España. La comunidad hispana de la Arquidiócesis representa un total de veinte naciones con sus culturas y tradiciones respectivas unidas por una misma lengua y una misma fe en una realidad única, en Estados Unidos.
History of the Office for Hispanic Catholics
For many years, the Office for Hispanic Catholics has worked to develop programs and ministries to care for the growing Hispanic Catholic community in the five counties that make up the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
In response to the growth of the Hispanic community of Philadelphia, His Eminence Cardinal Justin Rigali transformed the office for Hispanic Catholics in 2005, naming Monsignor Hugh Joseph Shields the Vicar for Hispanic Catholics. The Vicar for Hispanic Catholics represented the Cardinal in serving the pastoral needs of the Hispanic Apostolate of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, in order to strengthen their participation in the life of the Church.
In 2011, following recommendations made by the USCCB Secretariat for Cultural Diversity in the Church, Cardinal Rigali revised the ministry of the Vicar for Hispanic Catholics by forming the Office for Cultural Ministries and appointing Fr. Bruce Lewandowski, C.Ss.R. the Vicar for Cultural Ministries. At the end of 2015, Fr. Lewandowski was asked by the Provincial of his Order, the Redemptorist Fathers, to serve as pastor in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Baltimore, leaving open the Vicar’s position. On February 29, 2016, Rev. Gregory J. Semeniuk, C.M., began his service as the Vicar for Cultural Ministries in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The Office for Hispanic Catholics, the Office for Black Catholics and the Office for Pastoral Care of Migrants and Refugees, are now part of the Office for Cultural Ministries whose mission is mainly to promote unity in diversity in the daily living of our Catholic Faith.
The OHC works in harmony with other offices of the Archdiocese to better serve the Hispanic community, as well as organizations and individuals who are not necessarily part of the Archdiocese, yet are concerned about the well-being of our Hispanic community. At present, the OHC serves as a resource to 36 parishes with Hispanic Catholics, with a total of 29 priests, 28 religious sisters, 14 Hispanic deacons and many pastoral agents and lay volunteers.
It is the function of the Office for Hispanic Catholics to walk in solidarity with the increasing Spanish-speaking population residing in the Archdiocese- reaffirming their Faith, values and traditions, and encouraging leadership in their parishes and communities, and celebrating their unique contributions to Catholic life in Philadelphia. This growing population, with representation from the 19 Spanish-speaking countries of the Americas, as well as Spain reflects the multi-cultural nature of the United States. The Archdiocese’s Hispanic community represents a total of twenty nations with their respective cultures and traditions united by the same language and Faith in a unique reality- the United States.
